Inflammation! When the body is fighting off bacteria in the bloodstream, inflammation occurs. Bleeding gums, which occurs when gums become highly inflamed, are a significant source of bacteria in the blood. More inflammation in the gums leads to more bacteria entering the blood. The higher the level of bacteria present in the blood; the more inflammation will spread throughout the body. This inflammation may eventually lead to the narrowing of important arteries. Heart disease is caused by the narrowing or blockage of important blood vessels.
