Does Gum Disease cause Heart Disease?
The American Dental Association and the American Heart Association have acknowledged the relationship between gum disease, also called periodontal disease, and heart disease.
So, what is the link?
Inflammation! When the body is fighting off bacteria in the bloodstream, inflammation occurs. Bleeding gums, which occurs when gums become highly inflamed, are a significant source of bacteria in the blood. More inflammation in the gums leads to more bacteria entering the blood. The higher the level of bacteria present in the blood; the more inflammation will spread throughout the body. This inflammation may eventually lead to the narrowing of important arteries. Heart disease is caused by the narrowing or blockage of important blood vessels.
What can you do?
The American Dental Association recommends the following:
- Brush teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
- Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
- Visit your dentist regularly for oral examinations and professional cleanings.
